“Born in a small town outside of Memphis, Tennessee, Sue moved to New York over seven years ago to study Fashion Design and Art History at Pratt, interning for stylists and at places like NYLON and Refinery29 along the way. She is the digital editor at W, where she writes about fashion, beauty, and culture. In her free time she loves taking pictures with a cheap old film camera, drawing, watching tons of movies, and hanging out with her dog Owen.”
ON HER MORNING ROUTINE
Every morning is a little different, but it always starts with me dragging Owen out of bed for a walk. After that, I try to get in a little exercise whether it’s a class at the gym, a Ballet Beautiful DVD, or a quick run. Then I usually send my mom a few pictures of Owen, get ready quickly, and pick up a chai latte from the café downstairs before heading to work.
On discovering her creativity as a kid
I was always just making things as a kid. We didn’t really have any stores in my town, so if I couldn’t find something I saw in a movie or in a magazine, I would just make it. I remember seeing Mary-Kate and Ashley wearing plaid flared pants in Winning London, going to Wal-Mart and buying (totally the wrong kind) of plaid fabric, and hand-sewing a pair.
They fell apart while I was wearing them out in public, but I really don’t think they were that bad. No regrets.
on her beauty routine
I try everything, so I’m constantly switching things up. Right now I’m really into rosewater, so I have a few different kinds that I use in the morning. This Chantecaille mascara is even infused with it—it smells so good! Coconut oil is also a constant in my beauty routine. My stylist Nunzio Saviano just came out with these genius coconut oil hair wipes, I never leave the house without a few.
“My Sue bag is definitely my favorite thing I own. I bought the bag at the Louis Vuitton boutique in Saks my first week in New York and had instant buyer’s remorse! A year later, I started putting patches on it and liked it so much more. Every patch means something—places I’ve been, people I care about, fun dates I’ve gone on—plus it fits everything I need. Most things in my closet have some kind of sentimental value.

On Anya Hindmarch
I’m a huge Anya Hindmarch fan. I have so many of her stickers I don’t know where to put them all, but I’m going to keep buying them forever anyway. I just got two special ones in Tokyo—the ultimate souvenirs.
On the william eggleston book
The William Eggleston book was a gift from my mother—we never went to Graceland growing up, we just drove by William Eggleston’s house like crazy art stalkers.
On her favorite record shop + record
I always go to Goner Records when I’m home and usually end up buying whatever they have on in the store. This Back from the Grave compilation was playing last time and I’ve been collecting the series ever since. It’s exactly what it says—raw mid-60s punk!
on her personal style
I usually gravitate towards bright colors and ‘70s shapes, but that doesn’t mean I don’t leave the house in all-black multiple times a week.
I love stores that are about more than just clothes, like Sincerely, Tommy, What Goes Around Comes Around, Maison Kitsuné, The Deep End Club, and Shop Super Street. For vintage jeans, I always go to Mirth—their selection is insane.
